Compost Worms
We carry compost worms, Eisenia foetida(commonly
known as red wiggler, brandling, or manure worm).
Okay, you don’t expect to find compost
worms at the hardware store. But we have stocked them for years and are one of the few places to do so. We have worms available
year-round, but call first…they are perishable, and we have to carefully time our shipments to ensure the health and
happiness of our worms. Due to their perishable nature we do not ship compost worms. We sell a one quart container (approximately
250-300 worms) for $11.99.
Ladybugs are an effective method of natural pest control. Ladybugs prefer to eat aphids and will devour up to 50
a day, but they will also attack scale, mealy bugs, boil worm, leaf hopper, and corn ear worm. They dine only on insects and
do not harm vegetation in any way.
We sell a tub of approximately 1500 Ladybugs for $7.99.
Praying Mantids
Praying Mantids eat a wide variety of garden pests. In their younger stages they eat aphids, thrips, flies &
maggots, small caterpillars, leafhoppers, white grubs and other soft-bodied insects. Mature Mantids feed on larger caterpillars,
earwigs, chinch bugs, sow bugs, beetles, grasshoppers and other large insects. We carry a tub with two egg cases ready
to hatch when the weather warms for $8.99.
Mason Bees
The Blue Orchard Mason Bee, Osmia lignaria, is an excellent pollinator. Each one is able to do the pollinating
work of 120 honeybees. This will improve the bloom on flowering plants and increase the yield in fruit trees.
Mason bees are different than honey bees and bumble bees because they do not have a queen, do not make hives, and do not make
honey. Because they do not have these things to protect, they normally don’t sting and are safe around children
and pets.
Burlap Bags
We have recycled burlap coffee bags that have many uses. They work great for weedblock, sheet mulching,
bulk storage and more. We sell a bundle of six bags for $5.49.
Compost
Compost helps break up clay soils,
improves drainage, promotes healthy root growth and adds valuable micro-nutrients to the soil. We carry Gardner & Bloome
soil building compost in 3 cu. ft. bales for $9.99.
